About the Location
Victoria Street or Lebuh Victoria is a street in George Town. Two thirds of it is located within the core zone of the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.Victoria Street was laid in the late part of the 19th century. Until the mid 19th century, the area where Victoria Street is located was coastal mudflats with wooden piers running down to the sea.
Land reclamation that took place between 1880 and 1904 created new land that extends outwards from Beach Street. It provided new land which developed into the Chinese Trades Neighbourhood, a precinct of wholesalers and warehouses belonging to the Chinese community.
For a while, the properties facing Beach Street enjoyed an extended lot all the way to the sea. However, when Victoria Street was created, some of these lots were "severed".
The Yeoh Kongsi used to have its ancestral clan temple facing the sea. This was blocked with the creation of Victoria Street.
Boon San Tong Khoo Kongsi was another temple that originally faced the sea. Founded in 1878, it used to be entered from Beach Street. With the creation of Victoria Street, the ancestral temple for Boon San Tong completed in 1907 now has its main entrace facing Victoria Street.
